Kindergarten Readiness Assessment
Ohio's Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) is a tool used by teachers to measure the school readiness of children entering kindergarten. It assesses four areas of early learning and school readiness: social foundations (social and emotional development and approaches toward learning; mathematics; language and literacy; and physical well-being and motor development.
All kindergarten children take the KRA during the first weeks of the school year. Students do not experience the KRA as a test. Instead, the assessment is a combination of teacher observations of everyday activities and students' answers to questions. The results of the KRA provide a starting point for each child, and do not prevent any child from entering kindergarten.
The language and literacy portion of the KRA also meets the reading diagnostic assessment requirement of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG).
You may download the KRA data for every school district in Ohio. Learn how: Directions for Finding Released Ohio Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Data (PDF).
Extensive information and additional resources about the KRA, including an overview for families and an FAQ for parents and caregivers, may be found on the Ohio Department of Education website.
