Training Schedule
The State Library of Ohio is offering two types of workshops to support the READY TO READ program. Both the Basic and New Story Time workshops are full day events which will offer library and early childhood staff information on the concepts of early learning using the PLA/ALSC Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® training model.

Basic Skills Training
The Basic Ready to Read workshop will offer a n overview of the Every Child Ready to Read® early literacy initiative from the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association. The workshop will provide an overview of all three levels:

•  Early Talkers, (Newborn to Two-Years Old)

•  Talkers, (Two and Three Years Old)

•  Pre-Readers, (Four and Five Years Old)

Current research on early literacy development, the role of the parent/caregiver, and examples of the development of the six early literacy skills for each level will be shared. The program will integrate sharing good books, rhymes, songs and activities with the six skills necessary for later reading success.

Participants will also have hands on practice with portions of the Pre-Readers and Talkers parent workshops. Information will be shared on using the workshops to start new or strengthen existing partnerships.

Library staff are encouraged to invite early childhood partners to register and attend with them.   In-Service CEU forms will be available for all early childhood staff attending.

Participants will learn how to present three workshops designed for parents and caregivers. Techniques learned will show parents how to bond with babies through books, practice dialogic reading with toddlers and talkers, and to promote phonological awareness with preschoolers. Methods shared will allow participants to leave with practical ways to implement and develop a strong role for the library in the early childhood community. Library staff are encouraged to invite early childhood partners. (50 Maximum)

The New Story Time Training

Storytime Programs Transformed!

How to Incorporate Early Literacy Skills from the Every Child Ready to Read ® Project

Many libraries have been conducting preschool storytimes since the 1950s and toddler and baby programs since the 1980s using the same formula. It's time for change! The Every Child Ready to Read ® program, a joint project of the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, provides research showing the importance of the parent's role in young children's early literacy skills. This session will help attendees discover ways to incorporate the six early literacy skills in their storytimes. Participants will learn techniques for relating these skills to parents within the storytime setting.

This workshop is aimed at participants who have already attended the half or full day Basic Every Child Ready to Read ® training. It is required that participants attend the ECRR Basic workshop before attending the Storytime workshop.

Attendees should bring with them to this session:

•  A favorite book used in your storytime.

•  A written outline of a favorite storytime.(not the items themselves)

(50 Maximum)
